Externship For Veterinary Student

At Elko Veterinary Clinic, we love teaching eager and friendly people. We offer our extern program to students who want to learn. We give vet students the opportunity to work with either small-animal or large-animal veterinarians. The small animal species breakdown is 85% canine, 14% feline, and 1% Exotics. The large animal species breakdown is 77% equine, 14% bovine, 7% Caprine, and the remaining 3% is mixed between Porcine, ovine, and camelids.

Some of our guidelines/useful information:

  • We expect you to be actively learning while at Elko Veterinary Clinic to allow you to get the best out of your time here.
  • Must be currently enrolled in Veterinary School.
  • You must carry your own professional liability insurance either through your school or through the AVMA. Proof of insurance is required.
  • Handling animals is up to the veterinarian. You will be involved as is appropriate, but hands-on is not guaranteed.
  • If you are entering with the large animal veterinarians, expect to be in the field all day.
    • Bring water to drink and pack lunch. Also, come prepared for the different weather conditions (hot or cold).
  • You will be required to sign a waiver.
  • Pictures are not permitted at any time.
  • In the event of an emergency, we ask that you stand back and stand out of the way.
  • Stand back when watching our veterinarians work. Anything can happen during an exam, and they need space to react.
  • There will be no questions in front of the clients. The veterinarians will be happy to answer questions after the appointment is completed.
  • If the large animal is slow, we expect students to jump in and work with the small animal veterinarians and vice versa. Winter is normally slower for large animals.
  • As a veterinary student, you are expected to arrive first thing in the morning and stay until everything has been completed, approximately 7 am to 6 pm. We are open for regular appointments from 7 am to 6 pm Monday through Sunday.
  • Come prepared! We expect you to look ahead at the appointment schedule and come prepared for appointments and surgeries.
  • Attire: Small Animal: Business casual or scrub top with nice dark jeans or khaki pants and closed-toed shoes. Large Animal: Clean scrub top/polo shirt, nice clean jeans, and closed-toed shoes/boots.
